1. My kids don’t stress about the test.

Then do it for the kids that DO stress. Do it for special education kids. Do it for kids for whom English is not their first language. Do it for their teachers who are being unfairly graded on how kids from different poverty levels and backgrounds perform on 6 days out of the entire year. Do it to get rid of rote test prep. Do it so authentic learning can return to the classroom all year. Do it so science, creativity, and social studies can have a real presence in the classroom.

2. You can’t opt out of life/I want them to learn how to deal with stress.

We would be lucky if test anxiety was the most stressful thing that ever will happen in a child’s life. Sadly, it’s most likely not true. They will have plenty of other opportunities to manage stress and challenges. When you opt out, you are not teaching them to back away from a challenge. You are teaching them to stand up for change and fairness.

3. We took these same tests when we were young.

These are definitely not the same tests. We took developmentally appropriate tests, the results of which were given to both parents and teachers in a timely manner, showing strengths and areas for improvement. These current test results aren’t even given until your child is no longer in their class.

4. I don’t want to negatively affect their teacher.

Did you know that even if your child scores a high 4 one year and gets slightly lower 4 the following, it will show ‘no improvement’? A high 4 is a high 4! This is not an accurate measure of students or teachers. Teachers can’t come out and say it, but if your job depended on the performance of kids on a purposely confusing test grade levels above their skill, would you want them to take the test?

5. Their school will lose funds.

There is not wording that specifically states schools will lose funds, only that Title 1 money will be reallocated. Title 1 money is usually a small amount that is generally equal to the amount spent on test materials, test prep, and subs so teachers can grade exams. Additionally, there have been school districts on Long Island that have had high refusal numbers with no consequence.

6. I don’t want them to lose services/honors courses.

Teachers will use other methods to determine need or eligibility. Kids have refused and not been denied access to any of these.

7. I want them to learn to take tests. It’s good practice for the Regents/SATs/MCATs.

Let’s completely ignore the fact that there have been zero studies that show that testing 8 year olds at an 11 year old level results in higher SAT test scores. Didn’t we all manage to successfully take exams, get into college and become successful? Was there only one opportunity for us to learn these skills, or did we build upon them as we matured? If we’re going with that logic, should we let our kids start driving now to prepare for the driving test in 8 years?

8. I like to see how my kids are doing.

The teacher who sees them 180 days a year is able to tell you how they are doing. A test given 6 days out of the year with developmentally inappropriate material is not a good measure of what your child has learned. The results from this test aren’t received until fall of the following year, when your child is no longer in the class. The way it’s broken down and the secrecy of the test content doesn’t allow for information to be used in a constructive way in the classroom.

9. We need a tougher curriculum because we are lagging behind other countries.

No, we’re not. That information is taken from PISA scores. Other countries just use the data from their best and brightest students. USA uses all students. When adjusted for country size and poverty levels, USA ranks in the top. In fact, USA has remained in the same general area since PISA scores were recorded. Say we were falling behind. Do we really think that testing our kids at a developmentally inappropriate level will improve scores?

Wednesday night a Facebook page called Education is a Journey not a Race posted pictures of the 4th grade NYS ELA assessments. Who runs the page or how they obtained the photos is unknown. Within just a few hours the post was shared 175 times. It's no big surprise that by this morning the Facebook page no longer exists. It is unknown whether the owner of the page, Facebook or another unknown source removed the page, that info remains a mystery.

Basically the response from The New York State Education Department (NYSED) was that there will be consequences because of the leaked tests. Those consequences are wasting additional taxpayer dollars and more class time on field tests to replace the exposed questions.

What's with all the secrecy around these state assessments? Does it really matter if people read the passages and questions? Perhaps The NYSED suits are just trying to hide the fact that they, along with Pearson designed an assessment for 4th graders that was developmentally inappropriate.

Although the Facebook page Education is a Journey not a Race no longer exists these pictures of the assessment do. As a parent of a 4th grader I feel the moral obligation to share these pictures with fellow parents. Especially those parents who will have children entering 4th grade next year.

*On a side note being that no one knows what happened to the original page or person that posted these pictures I want to make sure If I go missing you all ask Pearson where they hid my body.
The more posts I read the more ignorance I witnessed. When people display such ignorance its usually because they have the lack of understanding or exposure. When you can't understand something or have never been exposed to something that tends to leave you feeling vulnerable, the feeling of vulnerability makes you defensive. Being defensive is a way of preventing the reality of bad situations from becoming overwhelming. Its easier to keep a defensive posture and pretend the bad is not there. Rather than examining why discussing the issues of racism and white privilege leave you feeling defensive.

If we don't educate ourselves and others the vicious cycle of ignorance will continue.

Below are links to an article and research paper that I have found to be very informative.

When I went into the 11th grade a teacher who I now I call mom rescued me and saved my life.

Sixteen years ago My Teacher, My Mom showed me that I had a life worth living. She took me into her home and put me into her heart. I used to struggle with what defines a person as a mother and I came up with this, a mother gives you life, nurture, unconditional love and guidance. My Mom, My Teacher has showed, taught and chosen to give me all of the things I constitute as mother. I will show and teach my children as she did me. Although I was not birthed from her, I'm alive because of her!

A brief history of the Education Commission of the States

The idea of an interstate compact on education was put forth in the mid-1960s by James Bryant Conant, an educator, scientist and diplomat who had served as the president of Harvard University from 1933 to 1953.

Writing at a time when the GI Bill, the National Defense Education Act, Great Society legislation and other initiatives had greatly enlarged the federal role in education, Conant, in his 1964 book Shaping Education Policy, called for a kind of counterbalance — a mechanism for improving and strengthening education policy and policymaking at the state level. Such a mechanism, he said, would:

Give voice to the diverse interests, needs, and traditions of states.

Enable them to cooperate and communicate with one another.

Promote their working together to focus national attention on the pressing education issues of the day.

Conant explained that, "there is no study in depth of the experience of the different states in this matter. There is no way in which a state now considering the subject can obtain reliable and complete information from other states that have had many years of experience. We ought to have a mechanism by which each state knows exactly what the other states have done in each education area, and the arguments pro and con. We ought to have a way by which the states could rapidly exchange information and plans in all education matters from kindergarten to the university graduate schools."

In early 1965, John W. Gardner, president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, teamed up with Terry Sanford, who had recently left the governorship of North Carolina, to transform Conant's idea into reality. Over the next two years, under Sanford's leadership, the Compact for Education was drafted, endorsed by representatives of all 50 states and approved by Congress.

The operating arm of the compact – christened the Education Commission of the States (ECS) — opened its headquarters in Denver in 1967, with former Cincinnati school superintendent Wendell H. Pierce serving as its first executive director. Sanford hailed ECS as “the most exciting educational experiment on the American scene — a working partnership for the good of the nation.”

ECS played a pivotal role in the transition to a standards-based education system, and in enlarging policymakers' recognition and understanding of emerging issues, trends and challenges: the needs of at-risk children, minority teacher quality and recruitment, system restructuring, service-learning, school choice, post secondary access and brain research.

When I first became involved in this movement two years ago I was 1 out of maybe 100 people in New York and maybe 1 out of a 1000 nationally. We collaborated and combined our efforts to raise awareness and encourage people to speak up and take a stand against corporate ed reform. We are no longer just a 100 or a 1,000 people fighting this fight we are now about 100,000 in NY state and over 500,000 nationally. I calculated the numbers above by adding up all the group members on facebook and we don't know how many are fighting this who are not on facebook.

I was reflecting on how I became involved in this movement. I became involved on accident, common core was not rolled out I wasn't alarmed by the content of my daughter's homework . I became involved by questioning how two first grade reading benchmarks could determine my daughter needed extra support in reading when I knew because my Mom is certified in reading that my daughter was actually a really strong reader.

While searching for answers I stumbled onto the United Opt Out website and everything I was reading made sense. I was enlightened and learned about high stakes testing.

High stakes testing was around before the Race to the Top initiative. High Stakes testing was initiated by No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

As we fight these new initiatives of corporate education reforms, I think we need to keep in hindsight that the original initiative is still lurking in the background.

Senator Flanagan was also influential in instituting merit based teacher assessments.

His biggest campaign contribution is from Michelle Rhee's organization Students First. In a nutshell this publication is a directive on how to manipulate Teachers, parents, administrators and even legislators to buy into the CCSS!

On pg. 48 in the publication Implementing Common Core State Standards and Assessments: A Workbook for State and District Leaders it states: In essence communications efforts help widen the circles of leadership beyond your department so that the transition to the CCSS has the support it needs. Build a Base of support by establishing the “guiding coalition”Flagging public support can push implementation off the rails. Pressure to water down student expectations may build, for example, once new assessment results show that students are not as prepared as once believed. Inevitably, state and district leaders need help in keeping rigorous expectations for students at the heart of their agenda. Though the strategic implementation team plays a key role in supporting this agenda, a small group of highly visible and credible leaders are needed to sustain effort in the face of pushback. The role of this “guiding coalition” is to remove bureaucratic barriers to change, exert influence at key moments to support implementation and offer counsel to the strategic implementation team. The guiding coalition might include a head of a university, key businessperson, state legislator, leader of a professional content association, teachers union leader or vocal parent.

My children start school
on Tuesday. My daughter is so excited because she loves school. Knowing she’s
starting the third grade I’m afraid she will experience a year of test prep.
I’m hoping this year will NOT ruin her love for learning.

My son is anything but
happy to be starting school. He’s angry and acting out big time. I hope that
this year he won’t feel that school is not fun, too hard and all he does is
work work work.

I’m really trying to
start the year off positive, I sent their refusal letters in and we have our
sneakers laced to the top with green laces! My daughter excited about refusing
the baselines and state assessments because she overhears almost every “education
reform” discussion I have.

I don’t want my daughter
to develop a negative attitude towards school or feel school is not important
like my son already feels. I will hold on to hope, remain positive and hide my
feelings of outrage for the developmentally inappropriate lessons I anticipate
will be coming home. My district adopted those not so lovely modules on engage NY, so it may be a challenge to keep
composure when he brings home worksheets on Mesopotamia or the Code of
Hammurabi but I’m going to try! First and third grade here we come!

Stay strong parents,

What does it mean to compete in a global economy? Are we competing for wages? Many other countries around the globe have a low waged working class ,are we trying to compete by developing a class of workers here in the U.S.? If so the median annual income in China converted to dollars is $10,900. The median annual income in India after taxes is $735.

Large corporations outsource employment to other countries because economically it makes sense to higher employees who will work longer hours for lower wages. If you think about it is the representative with the foreign accent that calls during dinner time to remind you your balance is pass due really "Joe" from "Idaho"?

In the 2012-2013 school year my children’s school
district had a trial run implementing the unethical teacher evaluation system
known as APPR. When I volunteered at the book fair in the beginning of the year,
I noticed and felt the dynamics and overall atmosphere of my children's
elementary school had changed. The amazing teachers looked defeated and their
morale was down.

I wanted to make the teachers in my children's school
aware of my efforts of advocacy. I wanted the teachers to know I am on their
side and speaking up for them. Whenever I had the opportunity I would express my
dislike of the way they were being evaluated and how unjust and demoralizing it
was to measure a teacher’s effectiveness based on a student’s test score.

In October of 2012
when I submitted my children's opt out letter I expressed that I could not let
my children be a part of the punitive, unjustly and degrading measures (APPR)
that are being used to evaluate teachers and principals in our public schools.
My child's teacher thanked me for my support and asked me if she could share my
opt out letter with her colleagues. Of course I said yes!

I feel very strongly that the unity between parents
and teachers is an important factor if we want to stop the corporate and
government attacks on our public school system.
Yesterday I returned home after spending three days camping in
upstate New York. There was no phone service and the closest place to access
wifi service was about a mile away from the campsite at the local market. Being unconnected I reflected on the travesty policy makers and corporate leaders
call “education reform”. Never before did I ever consider myself to be naive
until now. Even after all the research I've done and all the corruption I have
discovered from politicians being bought off by “campaign donations”, presidents
of the Teachers Unions and the National PTA being paid off by “grants”. I was naive
because knowing all the resources, funding and manipulation that took place in order for New York to even participate in Race to the Top and adopt the Common Core, I
still believed politicians would willingly help us get out of it.

By now I’m
hoping the majority of parents and teachers are awake and acknowledge that “education
reform” is not really about reforming anything other than economic growth for
our nation. There may still be many people still sleeping, but I think they are willingly keeping their heads in the sand and I must say I’m envious of those people, I often wish I had my head back in the sand that way when I think about of sending my kids to school in September I wouldn't feel that overwhelming sensation of guilt come across me knowing my children will be entering a toxic wasteland.

It's impossible for me to bury my head back in the sand and I refuse to give up and become complacent!

If you are awake we need to start figuring out how we can rise up
and conquer this system that was purposely designed for our children to fail,
for teachers to fail, and our schools to fail? We need to think bigger than
just talking amongst Facebook group walls. Social Media is great for networking
and making alliances with like minded people who see through these hogwash
reform policies. Bottom line is whether your Facebook group has 3,000 or 20,000 it
won’t change anything unless we come together outside the walls of Facebook and
stand up for our children, our teachers, and our schools! We can’t just sit
back and hope for change, we can’t just sit back hoping political leaders will
do what’s right, because they are the ones who got us into this mess! We have
to create the change! We must close the hostility gap between parents and
teachers! Together we need to rise and unite to reclaim our schools!
Our teachers will be beyond stressed because their careers rely on how well our children score on tests. Our political leaders could care less they spend their time in Albany doing anything but what their constituents want! The New York Senate of Puppets just follows the lead of the head of NY Puppets Governor Cuomo whose strings are held by Corporate entities. They are NOT fighting for what is right for our children! A certain senator is more concerned with enhancing his political career than protecting our children! I'm guessing most politicians are more concerned with their careers, but really did they forget we hold a vote! We voted you in and we will vote you out! SHAME ON YOU ALL! COME 2014 WE NEED TO VOTE THEM ALL OUT!!!! Changing of the guard! It's time we have common sense politics instead of you support my legislation and I'll support yours, even if they know morally and ethically it's not right, SCREW THAT!

Yeah I'm angry, I'm angry because our children deserve better. School shouldn't be a place full of toxicity!

Long Island Senators start fighting to Withdraw NY from the Common Core, Stop irrational and demoralizing teacher evaluations, end high stakes testing and put an end to Data Mining!

Expect to see a lot of these signs spread out widely across Long Island if you don't start doing whats right by our children!

There is so much information on education "reform" policies it's easy to get caught up in the dramatics. It's very easy to get caught up in peoples hysteria. I just choose not too. There are many different theories people have of what the agenda is behind the common core.I choose to make mine based on evidence, facts and connecting the links between documents and speeches.

There’s a publication that is listed on US Department of Education called Promoting Grit Tenacity and Perseverance, I recently started researching some of the technology devices this publication has listed. These devices are used to determine teacher effectiveness, student learning and engagement. From Facial Expression Cameras to Wireless Skin Conductance Sensor there are many “products” listed that state they measure students emotional responses while “learning” and teacher “effectiveness”.
Iannuzzi, Randi Weingarten and Dennis Van Roekel have sold them out.
Many parents including myself are very upset by the way our teachers are being demoralized and scrutinized. This video is calling out the presidents of the teachers union. Union presidents Richard C. Iannuzzi, Randi Weingarten and Dennis Van Roekel we urge you to start supporting your teachers again and stop making deals and accepting funds from corporations who have intent to destroy public education.
Once again this video is not attacking teachers its attacking their union presidents who are failing to support and speak up for their members!

Dear Commissioner King,

I write to you today with sadness in
my heart because school is no longer a place that fosters a child’s love for
learning. It sickens me that corporate
leaders such as Bill Gates, Eli Broad, Rupert Murdoch, and others are so blatantly
influencing education policy for their own financial gain. These multi-million dollar donations and
investments made by these corporate leaders through their foundations are
anything but innocent. The corporate world has totally monopolized our public
education system.

In your 2011 interview with the NY
Times you credited teachers for helping you to overcome an isolated childhood,
but now you are aiding in destroying the teaching profession. Your teachers
were able to help you overcome your isolated childhood because those teachers weren’t
consumed by data and you didn’t receive a one size fits all education. Students
today, who are growing up in similar situations as you did, will not be so fortunate
because they will be seen as just data points on a screen and not as a whole student.

If there is any human decency left in
you, speak up for our children, our
teachers, and our public schools, and influence your fellow policymakers to
make decisions that benefit our public education system instead of writing policies
to aid in its demise. Education can be reformed if the intentions are pure and
not led by greed.

Just as through your own experience,
you know there is no common child. I implore you to stop supporting standards geared
towards the common child. Join us in the fight to return public education back
to the public!
